Towel Multipacks vs. Singles: Where the Savings Add Up

Towel Multipacks vs. Singles: Where the Savings Add Up

A six-pack of 24x50 bath towels at $24 works out to $4 a towel. Buy the same towel on its own for $5.50 and the gap hardly registers on one receipt. Spread across a 60-piece order, though, it comes to $90 for cotton that is no different from the cheaper kind.

Towel Multipacks And Single Purchases Defined

A multipack is a set number of identical pieces sold as one unit. At a big-box store that might be a two-pack, or one of the bath towel sets put together for a home bathroom. Wholesale moves in bigger steps.

Like many suppliers of bulk towels for businesses, we sell most items by the dozen, with a one-dozen minimum per item and color. Larger pieces come in smaller units. Our 30x60 bath sheets, for example, sell six at a time.

A single purchase sits at the other end of the scale. It ties up the least cash and costs the most per piece.

The Real Cost Per Towel

Price Per Piece By Pack Size

Start by dividing the pack price by the number of pieces. The opening six-pack comes out at $4.00 each, and a dozen of the same 24x50 at $42 drops to $3.50. Bigger is usually cheaper, but not on every line. On our 15x25 and 16x27 Premium Plus hand towels, the six-pack towels and the full dozen land within a cent of each other per piece.

Landed Price After Shipping

We charge freight by weight and distance. Add it to the pack price before dividing, and that $42 dozen with $9 of shipping really costs $4.25 a piece. A dozen of our 27x54 hotel bath towels weighs 15 pounds. That is five times the weight of a dozen 16x27 hand towels, and the freight follows.

Cost Per Wash Over Time

For anything in daily service, the better number is what each piece costs per wash. Say the $4.25 piece lasts 150 washes and a thinner one at $2.75 is done after 60. That works out to under 3 cents a wash for the heavier piece. The thin one runs a bit over 4.5 cents, and it needs reordering every 60 washes instead of every 150. Treat 150 and 60 as placeholders. Hard water like Phoenix's, or a dryer run hot all day, will move both numbers.

Where Bulk Towel Packs Pay Off?

Gyms, Salons, And Inns

At a gym handing out a couple hundred towels before 9 a.m., a full case is gone within days. It never sits long enough to cost anything. Most housekeeping staff plan around three par, meaning three full sets for every set in use. Run that for a 12-room inn putting two bath towels in each room and you get 72. That is exactly six dozen, and an owner pricing affordable bulk bath towels can order that count with nothing left over.

Fewer orders help as well. A salon that restocks hand towels every two weeks takes 26 deliveries a year, against four for one that orders quarterly.

Matching Shades From One Lot

Reorder navy in October to match a March shipment and there is a fair chance the mill dyed the two batches separately. Hang them next to each other and the newer batch can read a shade darker or bluer. That is the main argument for ordering wholesale towel sets for every room in one go. When a color is part of the brand, ask for the full order to come from one batch.

Hidden Costs Of Bulk Buying

Excess Stock And Storage

Ten cartons nobody needs until spring are ten cartons of cash parked on a shelf. Accounting has a name for what that costs, carrying cost. Stack them in a back room next to a washer and they can come out smelling musty before a single guest touches one. Ordering to par avoids most of that. It also gives the linen replacement budget a starting figure based on actual use instead of last year's invoices.

Light Packs That Wear Fast

Sort any wholesale page by price, low to high, and the first results are usually the thinnest towels on it. So check the weight before the price, either pounds per dozen or GSM (grams per square meter). We print the weight in most product names and list GSM on each product page. On our thickness chart, a 27x54 at 15 pounds per dozen comes to about 600 GSM. Light terry thins out faster in commercial laundry, which slowly pushes its true price back up.

Retail Sets With Spare Pieces

Retail bath towel sets usually come with washcloths, and a gym will never hand out a single one. Those washcloths are still baked into the price of the box. Buying sizes separately by the dozen sidesteps that.

When A Smaller Towel Order Wins?

Sometimes the risks above outweigh the discount.

Testing A New Towel

Committing to ten dozen of a style nobody on staff has washed is a gamble. Economy towels are compressed in bales, so they look thin out of the carton and only fluff up after the first wash. Washed towels also can't come back to us. That is why we sell towel samples for a small charge, and five or six runs through your normal cycle will say more than any product photo.

Replacing A Few Lost Pieces

A vacation rental that loses two bath towels a month has no use for another full case. The smallest pack available, often a six-pack, covers several months of losses. White is the forgiving color for top-ups. A new white piece beside an older one shows far less contrast than fresh navy next to faded navy.

Five Steps To Buy Towels In Bulk

  1. Count one normal week of use for each towel type, including the busiest hours.
  2. Multiply by three for par and round up to whatever pack size the item comes in.
  3. Price the six-pack, the dozen, and the case with freight added before picking one.
  4. Put each color on one order instead of splitting it across the year.
  5. Book the next reorder before stock falls below one par.

Common Asking Questions

Are Towel Multipacks Always Cheaper Than Buying Singles?

Usually. A bigger pack tends to bring the cost per towel down, though a six-pack and a dozen can price almost the same. Half a carton left unopened by summer wipes out the gain anyway.

How Many Towels Should A Small Business Keep In Stock?

Start at three times what is in use at any moment, so a yoga studio with 20 towels out during a busy class keeps about 60. If an outside laundry picks up twice a week, add a fourth set for the days the truck has them. Our post on stocking a busy tanning salon walks through the full count, and the same method works for a gym.

What Towel Weight Works Best For Commercial Use?

It depends on who is drying off. A hotel guest notices a plush 600 GSM piece, while a gym member mostly wants one that is dry again by the next shift. For hotels and rentals comparing affordable bulk bath towels, run the cost per wash math from earlier on two grades before deciding.

Do Wholesale Towel Sets Save Money?

For a hotel that stocks bath, hand, and washcloth sizes in every room, yes. Buying them together also keeps the colors from one run. A gym that hands out one size does better buying that size alone.

Should New Towels Be Washed Before First Use?

Yes. Towels leave the mill with a finish that looks good on the shelf but keeps the loops from soaking up water. One warm wash with detergent and no fabric softener takes most of it off.

Nutshell

Multipacks win on price per piece almost every time. Whether they save real money comes down to two checks. Count how many towels actually go out each day, and see how a sample survives your own washer.

Start with whichever size runs out first on a Friday. Compare grades, test a sample, then stock up on bulk towels for businesses at TowelHub. In-stock orders ship from Atlanta the same or next business day, so get this quarter's order in before the shelf runs low.
